Where Jemaa el Fna is, and why the last 300 metres matter
To understand what a Jemaa el Fna transfer involves, picture the place. Jemaa el Fna is the open square between the Koutoubia mosque and the souks. By day it is juice stalls and snake charmers; after sunset it turns into an open-air food market. Why is the Jemaa el Fna transfer so cheap? 16€ is the lowest band of our Marrakech grid, because the airport is inside the city: Menara Airport to the Koutoubia is 6.5 km on a straight avenue. Distance and route: Marrakech Airport to Jemaa el Fna
Every Jemaa el Fna transfer takes the same route: out of the airport onto Avenue Guemassa, then Avenue de la Menara past the Menara gardens, then Avenue Mohammed VI and the ramparts to the Koutoubia. Twenty minutes in normal traffic, thirty at 6 p.m. on a Friday, fifteen at 1 a.m.
What the Jemaa el Fna transfer walk looks like
From the Koutoubia car park to a riad in Riad Zitoun is five to eight minutes on foot; to Mouassine or Kennaria, eight to twelve; to the Kasbah, the driver will usually go round by car to Bab Agnaou instead. Honest verdict: the L19 bus is good. It runs from the airport to Place de Foucauld right by the square, every 20–30 minutes from about 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., for 30 MAD. If you are alone, arriving in daylight, with a backpack and a riad you know how to find, take it. Why the bus is not a real alternative to a Jemaa el Fna transfer at night
